Dartmoor Oak

This is an unframed print, printed by hand by me in my studio in Devon on quality, acid free, 250gsm printmaking paper, using quality Caligo Safewash printmaking inks. The limited edition of 100 is sold out, but I have some artist proofs left. They are identical to those in the edition, but rather than a number, eg 10/100, they are marked A/P. Because all my prints are handmade, they may vary slightly in colour and tone from the photograph.

I knew I wanted to make a print of this tree as soon as I saw it on a common on the western edge of Dartmoor. It’s an old tree and has had room to spread out to its full, magnificent potential. It’s a beautiful shape, but not completely symmetrical.

This print was a chance to try out a new technique to me – etching lino with caustic soda. The background, or sky, plate had caustic painted and dragged on to it to make the cloud shapes. I hope you like it!
